Some fragrances are defined by trends.

Others become timeless icons.

Mediterraneo belongs to the latter.

For years, it has been one of Carthusia’s most beloved creations and, for many, the fragrance that first introduces them to the Maison. Inspired by the light, colours and natural beauty of Capri, Mediterraneo captures the island’s unmistakable character through a composition that is both refined and effortlessly contemporary.

More than a fragrance, it is a celebration of the Mediterranean lifestyle.

Inspired by Capri

Capri has long been a place where nature, culture and craftsmanship exist in perfect harmony.

Its dramatic coastline, citrus groves, lush vegetation and unmistakable Mediterranean light have inspired artists, travellers and visionaries for generations.

Since its foundation, Carthusia has transformed this unique heritage into fragrance.

Mediterraneo embodies this vision, translating the vitality and elegance of the island into an olfactory signature that feels fresh, sophisticated and enduring.

An iconic olfactory signature

Mediterraneo is built around a harmonious balance of vibrant citrus fruits, aromatic nuances and delicate floral facets.

Its luminous opening immediately evokes the citrus gardens that have become synonymous with Capri, while the heart is enriched by the refined freshness of Green Tea, adding clarity, elegance and modernity.

As the fragrance develops, a soft and balanced base leaves a clean, radiant trail that enhances its remarkable versatility.

The result is a fragrance that feels bright, elegant and naturally distinctive throughout the year.

The essence of Carthusia

Mediterraneo perfectly reflects the values that have shaped Carthusia for decades. A deep respect for exceptional raw materials.

Italian craftsmanship.

An enduring connection to Capri.

Together, these elements define a vision of perfumery where authenticity, quality and timeless elegance come together to create fragrances appreciated around the world.

It is this philosophy that has made Mediterraneo one of Carthusia’s most recognisable creations and an international bestseller.

A timeless expression of the Mediterranean lifestyle

Fresh yet sophisticated, luminous yet understated, Mediterraneo accompanies every occasion with effortless elegance.

It is created for those who appreciate authenticity, the vitality of Mediterranean citrus and the enduring beauty of Italian craftsmanship.

Because the Mediterranean is more than a destination.

It is a way of living.

And Mediterraneo continues to express that spirit through one of Carthusia’s most iconic fragrances.

From a dance between two worlds emerges Intenso di Mirto, a fragrance that intertwines the refined style of Paris with the sunny vitality of Mediterranean tradition. It strikes a perfect balance, like a sunset encounter between a blooming garden in the Jardin du Luxembourg and a wild cliff overlooking the sea.

The top notes open with an unexpected and intriguing energy: aromatic and resinous Juniper Berries blend with the velvety warmth of Davana and the spicy freshness of Ginger. It’s a sophisticated and bold opening, evoking a stroll (promenade) along an elegant Parisian boulevard, as the wind carries a hint of the Mediterranean.

In the heart of the fragrance, Myrtle (Mirto), the undisputed symbol of Mediterranean Nature, finds a new voice through the delicate and romantic embrace of Rose. Completing this accord is the golden touch of Osmanthus, with its fruity and velvety nuances adding unprecedented depth. This heart expresses a poetic synergy, where tradition meets contemporary boldness.

The base notes reveal an enveloping and structured trail. Soft, caressing Musk intertwines with the warm, woody undertones of Cedarwood and Patchouli, delivering a finish that seduces and lingers, leaving an indelible memory.

Intenso di Mirto is not merely a fragrance, but a bridge between two cultures, a hymn to the beauty of uniqueness and the power of fusion. It is the scent for those who embrace the elegance of the past with an eye toward the future, for those who experience the world as an interweaving of stories, places, and emotions to be discovered. A creation that redefines the art of perfume with a modern interpretation, while keeping the authenticity of its soul intact.

On the luminous coasts where the Mediterranean meets the land, where the wind carries the wild aroma of blooming broom flowers (Ginestra), Carthusia’s Intenso di Ginestra is born.

This fragrance captures the authentic soul of this extraordinary plant – a symbol of resilience and beauty. As part of the Intenso 2025 Collection, it celebrates the art of perfumery as a homage to nature.

The fragrance opens with an invitation to freshness: refined and luminous Neroli intertwines with sparkling Bergamot and vibrant Lemon Leaves. These top notes evoke the energy of a sun-drenched morning, when light brightens the landscape and every breath fills with vitality.

In the heart, the story intensifies. Broom Absolute dominates with its warm, enveloping, and subtly honeyed essence. Alongside it, Jasmine adds a soft floral elegance, while the richness of Tuberose amplifies the composition’s sensuality. It’s a vibrant heart, capturing the moment when flowers reach their peak splendor, diffusing their olfactory poetry into the air.

The base notes unveil the fragrance’s depth – a reassuring and seductive embrace. The sweetness of Vanilla blends with the creaminess of Sandalwood and the velvety softness of Musk, creating a trail that envelops, caresses, and lingers, like the memory of a sunset slowly fading on the horizon.Intenso di Ginestra is more than a perfume. It’s a story of nature and refinement, of strength and grace. It’s a journey through the wonders of the Mediterranean, transformed into an olfactory work of art capable of awakening emotions and memories. A fragrance that speaks of timeless beauty, designed for those who wish to carry with them the true essence of a landscape unique in the world.

Carthusia is thrilled to introduce Intenso: the new 2025 collection that reinvents the Mediterranean olfactory tradition.

The Capri sun kisses the skin, the scent of the Mediterranean scrub fills the air. From this timeless magic, from this eternal love affair between man and nature, comes Intenso, Carthusia’s revolutionary new perfume collection for 2025. It’s a bold project that, while rooted in our history, looks to the future with fresh eyes, reinventing the Mediterranean scent experience.

Prepare for an unprecedented sensory journey, an exploration into the beating heart of the Mediterranean, where nature expresses itself through powerful and enveloping aromas. Intenso is not just a collection, but an immersion into a world of profound emotions, an invitation to be transported by memories and the beauty that surrounds us, in a perfect balance between tradition and contemporary style.

Three exclusive fragrances make up this olfactory symphony: Ginestra, Basil, and Myrtle. Three iconic raw materials, interpreted in a new way, telling stories of authenticity, nature, and that unmistakable elegance that sets Carthusia apart. Each perfume is an ode to the evocative power of nature, designed to surprise brand enthusiasts and captivate a new audience in search of unique and unforgettable experiences.

To bring Intenso to life, we renewed our prestigious collaboration with Italian Master Perfumer Luca Maffei, joined, for this special occasion, by the celebrated Parisian nose Antoine Lie. Together, these two talented artists have enhanced the purity and modernity of the ingredients, creating compositions of rare refinement and longevity. Their passion for research and artisanal excellence is felt in every single note, in every nuance of this new collection.

Intenso also marks an evolution in Carthusia’s visual language. The bottles, in a new 50ml size, have been completely redesigned. The minimalist lines, enhanced by bright and vibrant colors, reflect the bold and refined spirit of the fragrances they hold. A perfect combination of simplicity and character, an interpretation of luxury in a modern key, in line with our constant commitment to innovation. The new bottles become visual symbols of the raw materials used, representing the harmony between tradition and modernity that has always defined us.

With Intenso, Carthusia takes a new step towards its global vision. Our commitment remains to bring the care for detail, the elegance of Made in Italy, and the magic of Capri to the world, engaging with an ever-wider and more cosmopolitan audience. This collection is aimed at those who seek distinctive and unforgettable fragrances, capable of expressing their individuality and their love for beauty.

2. Tour of the Island by Boat: The Most Suggestive Caves of Capri

If you have doubts about what to see in Capri from a landscape point of view, you cannot fail to admire the beauty of the island from the best perspective: that of the sea! You can book a complete tour with a guide and sailor or rent a boat and do the tour independently, starting from Marina Grande, the port of Capri.

For guided tours it is advisable to choose those lasting 1-2 hours where there is a stop at the Punta Carena lighthouse and also a stop in front of the suggestive Blue Grotto.

Using small rowing boats, in case of low tide, it is possible to enter the cave to admire its beauty. Another spectacle of nature, reachable only by sea, is certainly the White Cave: a pure white rocky inlet that extends for about 30 meters on the eastern side of the island, where it is also possible to swim!

In Paolo Sorrentino’s latest film, the protagonist finds himself in this unusually deserted location… don’t expect anything like this!

The perfect time is between 19:00 and 21:00, when you can attend the ancient ritual of the “walk” of

4. Visit the Carthusia Store: “I Profumi di Capri”

There is a place where the soul of Capri is literally “bottled” so that it can be taken away with you.

Carthusia has been creating fragrances inextricably linked to Capri since 1948, produced with artisanal methods and elements from Capri’s nature. The main store is located in Viale Matteotti and immediately catches the eye for the colorful floral decorations, the wooden shelves and the furnishings made up of skilfully restored furniture belonging to the ancient laboratory. By the way, did you know that Carthusia is the smallest perfume laboratory in the world?

If you are visiting the island and want to intoxicate yourself with its essence, looking for your ideal fragrance in this uniquely styled perfumery is a must.

5. The Gardens of Augustus

Among the things to see in Capri, the Gardens of Augustus represent the true triumph of the island’s natural beauty. The city park boasts a multitude of flowered terraces, colours, scents, neoclassical sculptures and a breathtaking panorama. This oasis was designed by the German Alfred Krupp, but after the First World War it was dedicated to the Roman emperor. Opening hours and prices vary according to the season, but it is advisable to visit the gardens in the early morning or late afternoon. Furthermore, the road that leads to the Marina Piccola bay, also designed by Krupp, is of great interest.

6. Sunset At Punta Carena Lighthouse

The Punta Carena lighthouse, one of the oldest in the country, is located in a rocky bay where it is possible to admire a beautiful sunset. Even if it is definitely not practical, the bravest can try their hand at diving and enjoying the water which is always clean and clear; if you wish, you can also enjoy an aperitif with live music at one of the local bars.

7. Admire The Panorama From Monte Solaro

For lovers of breathtaking views it is advisable to reach the highest point of the island: Monte Solaro.

Here you will find yourself about 580 meters above sea level with a 360 degree view of Capri with a view of Vesuvius, the Gulf of Naples and the entire Sorrento Peninsula.

If the idea of walking for an hour and a half doesn’t appeal to you, the easiest way to reach the place is definitely the chairlift. The climb starts from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri and takes about 12 minutes.

8. The Certosa of San Giacomo

In the collective imagination, Capri is associated with worldliness and luxury. In reality, among the things to do and visit in Capri there are also totally different activities and scenarios, such as the silent Certosa di San Giacomo. For those looking for a peaceful and relaxing experience, this is the ideal place. The oldest historic building on the island is now the Diefenbach museum and a venue for concerts and cultural events.

9. Villa Jovis

The Roman emperor Tiberius fell madly in love with Capri, so much that he built 12 villas for us… Villa Jovis is the largest of these. It extends for 7000 square meters on Mount Tiberius. It is possible to visit the archaeological site from Thursday to Sunday and the permanence time is approximately 40 minutes. Furthermore, just before the entrance to the villa is the Astarita Park: a free-entry park with a spectacular panoramic terrace for a pleasant break.

For many people it represents a way to express their personality, to enrich their beauty routine, sometimes to get noticed and leave their mark in the crowd. And yet, have you ever thought about how perfume is above all a tool for relating to the world around us? Well yes, perfume exerts great power over each of us and over the relationships we have within society, and it has done so since Ancient Egyptian times, such as when Cleopatra used perfumed essences to impress Mark Antony and consolidate , thus, his position on the throne.

Indeed, in addition to their more immediate function of “perfuming”, fragrances also have secondary identity and social functions. In other words, they have the ability to define and influence a person’s character or identity, even determining their relationships within the social contexts in which they live. How true is it that an odor that is unpleasant to our sense of smell automatically creates in us a reaction of distancing ourselves from what emanates it, be it an individual or a food?

So let’s see what are the areas of application in which perfumes can exercise their power over us, our emotions and even our purchasing choices.

Olfactory Memory: The Power of Perfume Linked to Memories

It is known that a great power held by perfume is to evoke memories, sensations and emotions in each of us. The sense of smell manages to take us back with our minds, even years later: this is because since we were children all the smells we perceive are automatically stored in our brain, creating an infinite baggage of perfumes called olfactory memory. This precious tool manages to catapult us to the precise moment we smell that particular smell, allowing us to evoke it even after a long time.

According to a research carried out by the perfume expert Fred Dale, the sense of smell is the one that binds us most to memories, above all of childhood: while visual memory loses 50% of its effectiveness after 3 months, memories related to the olfactory sphere, they lose only 20% even after a year.

Aromatherapy: The Therapeutic Approach to Essences

Aromatherapy, or “essential oil therapy,” is a therapeutic approach that uses oils to prevent disease or treat ailments on a physiological, psychological, or spiritual level.

It takes place through massages or inhalation, with the use of mainly natural essential oils, extracted from plants, flowers, leaves but also resins or barks. The French chemist Gattefossé coined the term “aromatherapy” after an experimental work on some essential oils in an attempt to make cosmetics. Gattefossé, placing some lavender poultices on a burn, immediately noticed the benefits, giving life to the term still used today.

Nowadays aromatherapy is a practice widely used to improve physical and mental well-being, as it is able to relieve the symptoms of many physical problems. For example, mint and eucalyptus work on sore throats and coughs; peppermint, pine and basil on headaches; lavender, jasmine and sage for skin irritations, etc.

Aromacology: Perfumes for Spiritual Wellbeing

Aromacology is distinguished from aromatherapy in two respects. The first is that while aromatherapy uses only natural essential oils, aromacology also makes use of synthetic fragrances. The second aspect concerns the method of application: while aromatherapy uses massages, baths and inhalations, aromacology simply exploits the sense of smell. In a nutshell, the benefits of this practice are given by the simple inhalation of a fragrance or essence, which acts by relaxing the nervous system and positively influencing mood.

Developed in 1989 by the olfactory research fund better known as the “Sense of Smell Institute”, the discipline of aromacology is based on scientifically proven data. According to studies, each perfume or essence triggers a stimulus that acts directly on our state of mind: there are fresh scents, such as lavender for example, which can easily bring to mind the memory of grandma’s clean laundry, air of home, and therefore, positive emotions dating back to childhood. Conversely, perfumes that are too persistent can cause stress and agitation, generally feeling unwell.

For aromacology, the right room fragrance can prove to be an excellent ally to positively influence mood. For example, a citrus fragrance such as the lemon-based one can promote concentration in an environment dedicated to study or work; a rose-based one can bring benefits in terms of stress reduction; one based on jasmine infuses tranquility and serenity to the spirit.

Olfactory Marketing: the power of perfume as a marketing strategy

Scent marketing is one of the most innovative and effective market strategies, mainly used in closed environments such as stores or companies. Through the strategic use of perfumes, the objectives are:

– create an environment around the buyer in which he can feel pampered and inspired by positive sensations;

– improve the sales/purchase experience and make it memorable.

The perfumed essences that are diffused in these environments have the task of stimulating the sense of smell, triggering particular sensations and emotions in customers, collaborators or patrons of a location.

In this case, the sense of smell becomes a true means of communication and olfactory marketing a fundamental tool capable of positively influencing the customer’s purchasing behavior in a clothing store, or the experiential value of a visitor to a museum. It has been found that the strategic use of perfumes can increase the time spent by buyers in stores, and even increase sales.

In the Carthusia house, A’MMARE arrives, the new unisex fragrance inspired by the Capri summer and by the love for the wonderful waters that surround the island, a source of positive emotions such as hope and freedom.

The new Eau de Parfum is signed by Luca Maffei, perfumer nose and creator for Carthusia of Essence of the Park, Terra Mia, Tuberosa and the reinterpretation of Gelsomini di Capri. In A’MMARE the citrus opening, with prevailing notes of Bergamot and Rosemary, acts as a delicate counterpoint to the scents offered by the Salt Crystals; the heart of the fragrance then contains aquatic and marine notes corroborated by mint leaves, which also expand to the woody base, made rounder and more enveloping by patchouli and musk. This mix is able to restore the typical summer sensation of when, coming up from the sea, the salt water that wets the skin evaporates, and gives the sense of smell the classic and unmistakable scent of the “beautiful season”.

If A’MMARE represents a real olfactory jewel, the creative flair of Paola Tassetti, curator of the bottle graphics, took care of making it even more precious. The artist from the Marches conceived the drawing with her unique and immediately recognizable style, the expression of a cross-disciplinary research: from biology to botany, from anatomy to archeology and architecture. In fact, on the bottle of A’MMARE Eau de Parfum, marine flora and fauna intertwine, giving life to a viridarium capable of recalling the colors and scents of the island’s aquatic universe.

These same motifs that dress the fragrance decorate all the other products in the line. Alongside the Eau de Parfum, in fact, Carthusia makes its debut for the sunscreens, available in the double all-over SPF 30 and 50+ version and flanked by the After Sun. 50% less plastic has been used for their packaging normally used for cosmetics of the same size (100ml), while their formulation was developed following the protocol of the “Ocean & Reef Care” program (the filters used are in line with the Hawaii standard SB n. 2571 which prohibits the use of Oxybenzone and Octinoxate to not harm the coral reef).

To further enrich the line there are the beach towels, which reproduce the Tassetti design on a white background or with white and blue stripes, with edges in orange or cobalt grosgrain, but above all the capsule of silk garments, made in collaboration with Laboratorio Capri, an ancient Capri tailor’s shop which has been a reference point for the international jet set passing through the island since the 1960s.

Let’s discover together the most important milestones in the history of perfume!

The History of Perfume from Ancient Egypt

To begin with, the origins of the perfuming ritual are very ancient. It is even said that they date back to 3000 BC, a time in which the ancient Egyptians gave the custom a double connotation: one sacred and one profane.

As far as the religious sphere is concerned, perfume was better known as “divine sweat” as effluents of particular natural substances were considered as moments of unification between man and divinity. Furthermore, perfume was used as a tool to get in touch with the deceased, especially in the technique of embalming bodies.

In a more profane field of application, however, perfumed oils, ointments and balms were carefully and delicately spread on the body by Egyptian women as a real rite of seduction. A historical episode, the meeting of Tarsus, saw Queen Cleopatra prepare herself with aromatic ointments to welcome Marco Antonio. Cleopatra decided to keep the politician waiting in order to increase his desire for her, arriving later on a ship full of incense that left a very fragrant trail.

In the end, thanks to the perfume, Cleopatra succeeded in bewitching Marco Antonio, also because the room prepared to house the man and intended for the first meeting of love was meticulously adorned with rose petals and aromatic herbs, which recreated an magical atmosphere and enveloping scent.

From the same period there is also Plutarch who offers a precious testimony regarding the most famous and widespread fragrance, especially among the pharaohs: the Kyphi, composed of a large number of essences. As the Greek philosopher and historian writes: “sixteen materials: honey, wine, raisins, cyperus, resin, myrrh, rosewood. Mastic, bitumen, fragrant rush, patience, juniper, cardamom and aromatic calamus are added, but not by chance, but according to the formulas indicated in the sacred books”. To these, after several studies, cinnamon, mint and pistachio were also added.

The Kyphi was purely used to relax the senses, sweeping away all worries in order to promote sleep as well. Relaxation, however, was not the only intended use of perfume for the Egyptians, who used it by spreading it on their hair and private parts to improve their amorous performances.

The Greeks and Perfume: History in the Hellenic Empire

The perfume continued to have a sacred connotation even in 1500 BC, in the ancient Hellenic civilization, when it was believed to have the power to reveal the existence of divinities. In particular, during funerals, the bodies of the deceased were wrapped in scented sheets, to then be burned together with plants such as violets, roses and lilies, considered symbols of eternity at the time.

In the absence of soap, in ancient Greece perfumed oils and ointments were also used for personal hygiene: these were stored in special containers called “alabastron”, terracotta vases which, due to their narrow and long shape, recalled amphorae.

Perfumes, called by the Greeks “euodia”, i.e. good smells, enjoyed great fame in the city of Athens thanks to their therapeutic virtues. Some were even exported throughout the Mediterranean basin: in particular, the “susinon” with the delicate notes of the lily, and the “kipros” with the fresh notes of mint and the citrus notes of bergamot.

The great importance of perfume in the Hellenic era also results from a basic text of ancient perfumery, the “Treatise on odors” (despite the absolute ban on its use sanctioned by the illustrious Socrates).

The Perfumes of the Roman Empire

The history of perfume had a big evolution in the flourishing period that dates back to the Roman Empire. The term “perfume”, in fact, comes from the Latin “per fumum”, which means through the smoke. This is because the priests, to ask the gods for favor, threw perfumed ointments on the braziers, creating a large cloud of perfumed smoke that rose up to the sky.

However, it was not only the religious sphere that used perfume for their rituals. In fact, many scenes of daily life of the time saw the patricians reserving moments of relaxation in the baths called “unctorium”, during which they were massaged with perfumes mixed with oils or even wine.

The occasions for conviviality and sharing represented by banquets, then, were perfect uses for perfumes, which helped to recreate the otium atmosphere so desired at that time. Drops of perfumed oils mixed with water were spread on the tables and tricliniums intended for diners. Furthermore, the slaves placed doves in bowls of water mixed with perfumed oil, so that, during the meal, they were left free to fly and aromatize the environment thanks to their flapping wings.

Furthermore, as was already the habit for Egyptian and Greek women, even the Roman ones used perfumes for the care and beauty of the body. In particular, these inserted a mixture composed of herbs and scented flowers inside small cones intertwined in their hair: in this way, in the sun, the mixture melted and ended up perfuming their whole head. Not only women, however, loved to pamper themselves using perfume. It is said that even Cesare appreciated wrapping himself in his “telinum”, an oily perfumed ointment with notes of marjoram, sweet clover and fenugreek.

The Role of Perfumes in the Middle Ages

If perfume today represents that touch of class that no one can do without, it is undoubtedly due to the formulations and techniques that have been handed down thanks to the transcription and preservation of ancient texts by the Church, especially during the Middle Ages.

In any case, the custom of perfuming oneself was also maintained in this period. In particular, perfumes were used to flavor the bathrooms, or at banquets, when basins of scented water were offered to guests to rinse their hands between meals, since it was not customary to use cutlery.

Unfortunately, brought by the Genoese fleet returning from the Black Sea, the plague landed in Europe in 1347, ending up infecting the entire continent in a few months. Waters, oils, fumes, wines: everything was used in the hope of preventing contagion. The pomme d’ambra in particular was the instrument most used in the attempt: also known as a pomander, it was a pendant ampoule made of metal that contained fragrant mixtures composed of amber, balms, vanilla, musks and other essences. Worn around the neck, the sphere then gave off perfumes which were thus inhaled for aromatherapy purposes.

Also during the Middle Ages, the history of perfume experienced an essential turning point. In Salerno, in fact, the distillation of alcohol was discovered, which replaced the oil in the composition of the perfumes themselves.

A little later, the first perfume with a name was born, the so-called “Hungary water”: a fragrance created especially for Queen Elizabeth of Hungary on the notes of rosemary and lavender. It was said that this perfume had been given as a gift to the Queen as an elixir of eternal beauty: in all probability the formula worked, since her last wedding was celebrated at the remarkable age of 70.

Perfume in the Renaissance

Another key period in the history of perfume was the Renaissance, when the distillation process was greatly improved and higher quality spices and smells were sought. In fact, vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon, tobacco, pepper and other excellent raw materials began to enter the list of ingredients of the finest perfumes.

Of that era, among other things, there is one other thing that is certain: the best perfumers were all Spanish and Italian. However, if Italy lost this primacy, it was due to a Florentine noblewoman, the young Caterina de’ Medici. Her story tells us that her passion for perfumes was well known to all, so much so that in a short time all the ladies of the city began to imitate her and became passionate about perfumes. Caterina even had a fragrance created especially for her by the Dominican monks of Santa Maria Novella, at the time very famous for their perfume laboratories: the creation took the name of “Acqua della Regina”, with distinctly citrus notes.

Subsequently, however, Catherine left for France, where she awaited her marriage to her betrothed Henry II. In her transfer, the noblewoman wanted to bring with her her trusted perfumer Renato Bianco, later renamed by the French René Le Florentin, who opened his own shop, enjoying considerable success among other things. This meant that many Italian perfumers decided to seek their fortune in the romantic city of Paris, which in this wake elegantly managed to slip the primacy in perfumery away from Italy and Spain.

Despite this, the art of perfumery continued to be handed down in Florence and throughout Italy, and in particular in the monasteries where people loved to experiment with new essences and spices. It was precisely from a charterhouse, that of San Giacomo in Capri, that Carthusia (whose name derives from Certosa) was born with its long history of traction and love for perfume.

Moving to the medical field, however, perfumes were widely used in aromatic baths, the so-called “marmites à plantes”, which were used to cure some diseases. Subsequently, however, it began to be thought that water could be a means of transmitting diseases, and these baths were used less and less. Less water undoubtedly meant less personal hygiene, but also a greater diffusion of perfume, which began to be used more and more to cover bad smells.

Perfumes in the 19th Century

Fortunately, in the 19th century, personal hygiene once again took on an important role thanks to the diffusion of savoir-vivre treatises among the upper middle class, with a positive effect on society as a whole, which saw an example of virtue in the more affluent classes. The rediscovered care for the body led to the need to use perfume, which not even Napoleon Bonaparte was able to give up.

Here in 1828 Guerlain took the field, with the opening of his first perfumery Maison in Paris and becoming after a few years, precisely in 1853, “His Majesty’s official perfumer”. In fact, he created the first Eau de Cologne Impériale specifically for the Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, to whom she was given exclusive use for years before its launch on the market.

Simultaneously with the opening of the first French perfume house, the German chemist Friedrich Wöhler marked another great turning point in the history of perfume with his innovative synthesis process. The latter, which consists in the synthesis of urea (a laboratory organic compound), became the definitive replacement of the natural perfume. Among the first synthesized products we mention Fougère Royale d’Houbigant in 1882, on the notes of coumarin, and Jicky de Guerlain in 1889, with lavender and vanillin.

Since then, the study and experimentation on perfumes became more and more assiduous, so much so that thanks to an intuition of the London perfumer Eugene Rimmel, the aromas were divided into 18 groups, to classify the various notes more easily.

Fresh, energizing, sparkling. There would be many words to describe citrus scents, but probably none can fully express their invigorating charge. In fact, if you’re looking for a fragrance that conveys cheerfulness and a certain euphoria while maintaining a feeling of good humor and lightness, a citrus perfume is the perfect choice. Find out more about the magical universe of citrus fragrances!

Citrus scent: characteristics and curiosities

First of all, when we talk about fragrances belonging to the citrus olfactory family in perfumery, we refer to fragrances made with oils deriving from citrus peels by squeezing (the essential oil is contained in a measure between 2 and 4% of the total weight of the peel). It is an extraction technique from the skins which makes use of mechanical actions such as centrifugation and pressure. The principle consists in pressing the skins to empty the oily cells of their odorous content. The latter is then centrifuged and filtered.

Let’s dispel a myth right away. Too often we think that citrus perfumes are suitable almost exclusively for the summer period. Nothing more wrong! Citrus notes such as lemon, bergamot, orange, mandarin, lime, grapefruit (and so on and so forth) derive from essences which are by their nature stimulating the nervous system. In fact, they are also and above all excellent in the winter months, when there is a need for greater relaxation and mental resistance to face the coldest and grayest days of the year.

While on the one hand they counteract the numbing of the senses caused by the cold, on the other the citrus scents blend perfectly with summer atmospheres: the heat, the sun, the sea, the need for freshness. During the heatwave there is nothing more refreshing than a touch of citrus.

Citrus notes are usually the first hint of the composition of many fragrances, as they are used by master perfumers as an “opening” to capture the attention of those who are trying them. However, it must be said that these notes, present in large quantities in citrus perfumes, are by their very nature volatile, and tend to evaporate quickly. In fact, coming from fruits such as bergamot, lemon, lime, mandarin, orange, grapefruit, cedar, kumquat or yuzu, citrus notes fall into the category of top notes, those that fade faster.

Citrus scents: all the most common notes

If you are looking for a citrus perfume, here are some tips on the characteristics of the various citrus notes:

citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit have a more acidic vein, indicated if you prefer fresh and energizing citrus scents, especially for those who play sports. Lemon is ideal when daily life requires great concentration and to keep stress away. Grapefruit evokes euphoria, and drives away frustration, indecision and debasement when an important choice has to be made;

orange and mandarin veer towards sweet, and evoke relaxation for mind and body, ideal for those who do particularly stressful jobs. Mandarin, with its freshness and energy, is able to evoke joy and light-heartedness and to start the day on the right foot. Orange is the most youthful of citrus fruits, characterized by a reassuring sweetness perfect when you need a scented cuddle.
lime and yuzu, exotic citrus fruits, inspire the desire to travel and beach holidays, and are perfect for those with a sedentary lifestyle. Lime in particular is perfect as an antidote to melancholy, with its pungent and sour scents that bring vivacity even on the saddest days;

bergamot is the most full-bodied citrus fruit, and is suitable for giving a serious and mature impression of oneself. Remove anxiety and help find inner peace.

In Via Camerelle, this is also a unisex perfume, those of bergamot stand out among the top notes, but also of orange and lemon. The combination of citrus notes with spicy hints gives great character to the fragrance, making it not only fresh but also decisive and elegant. Bergamot in aromatherapy evokes a feeling of cleanliness and regeneration, and is ideal for undertaking particularly difficult days with the desire to make it and to overcome one’s limits.
