Fresh, energizing, sparkling. There would be many words to describe citrus scents, but probably none can fully express their invigorating charge. In fact, if you’re looking for a fragrance that conveys cheerfulness and a certain euphoria while maintaining a feeling of good humor and lightness, a citrus perfume is the perfect choice. Find out more about the magical universe of citrus fragrances!

Citrus scent: characteristics and curiosities

First of all, when we talk about fragrances belonging to the citrus olfactory family in perfumery, we refer to fragrances made with oils deriving from citrus peels by squeezing (the essential oil is contained in a measure between 2 and 4% of the total weight of the peel). It is an extraction technique from the skins which makes use of mechanical actions such as centrifugation and pressure. The principle consists in pressing the skins to empty the oily cells of their odorous content. The latter is then centrifuged and filtered.

Let’s dispel a myth right away. Too often we think that citrus perfumes are suitable almost exclusively for the summer period. Nothing more wrong! Citrus notes such as lemon, bergamot, orange, mandarin, lime, grapefruit (and so on and so forth) derive from essences which are by their nature stimulating the nervous system. In fact, they are also and above all excellent in the winter months, when there is a need for greater relaxation and mental resistance to face the coldest and grayest days of the year.

While on the one hand they counteract the numbing of the senses caused by the cold, on the other the citrus scents blend perfectly with summer atmospheres: the heat, the sun, the sea, the need for freshness. During the heatwave there is nothing more refreshing than a touch of citrus.

Citrus notes are usually the first hint of the composition of many fragrances, as they are used by master perfumers as an “opening” to capture the attention of those who are trying them. However, it must be said that these notes, present in large quantities in citrus perfumes, are by their very nature volatile, and tend to evaporate quickly. In fact, coming from fruits such as bergamot, lemon, lime, mandarin, orange, grapefruit, cedar, kumquat or yuzu, citrus notes fall into the category of top notes, those that fade faster.

Citrus scents: all the most common notes

If you are looking for a citrus perfume, here are some tips on the characteristics of the various citrus notes:

  • citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit have a more acidic vein, indicated if you prefer fresh and energizing citrus scents, especially for those who play sports. Lemon is ideal when daily life requires great concentration and to keep stress away. Grapefruit evokes euphoria, and drives away frustration, indecision and debasement when an important choice has to be made;
  • orange and mandarin veer towards sweet, and evoke relaxation for mind and body, ideal for those who do particularly stressful jobs. Mandarin, with its freshness and energy, is able to evoke joy and light-heartedness and to start the day on the right foot. Orange is the most youthful of citrus fruits, characterized by a reassuring sweetness perfect when you need a scented cuddle.
    lime and yuzu, exotic citrus fruits, inspire the desire to travel and beach holidays, and are perfect for those with a sedentary lifestyle. Lime in particular is perfect as an antidote to melancholy, with its pungent and sour scents that bring vivacity even on the saddest days;
  • bergamot is the most full-bodied citrus fruit, and is suitable for giving a serious and mature impression of oneself. Remove anxiety and help find inner peace.
